House at Deviock

We wanted to build a new home which took advantage of the magnificent views towards the sea on one side and the moors on the other.

Sustainability is an issue we take seriously and the building had to be thermally efficient, take full advantage of natural light and solar gain and to use materials with low embodied energy.

The construction is of timber frame with cellulose insulation lined inside with Fermacell paper reinforced gypsum boards and clad externally with untreated cedar boarding with a local stone plinth and natural slate roof.

DAC International were chosen to supply the timber frame as they are leaders in the field of ever increasing standards in timber frame construction. They have a proven record in 'Super E' technology and are able to provide a complete integrated package incorporating all joinery with air tight construction to the exacting standards expected in Canada's more testing environment.

As the building has very low air infiltration ventilation is managed by a heat recovery system with humidity controls in critical areas.

The windows are timber framed with argon filled double glazed units with low-E glass.

The mass of the central masonry chimney and the Fermacell floor decking form a thermal reservoir to stabilise temperature fluctuations.

A ground source heat pump provides heat for low temperature underfloor heating topped up with high efficiency wood burning stoves. It is intended to utilise solar energy to provide domestic hot water.

Decorations are of low odour water based paints with low volatile organic compounds. Bamboo floor finishes were chosen as the material is as hard as oak and fast growing – it can be harvested in four to six years. Ceramic floor tiles were chosen for areas where a no nonsense durable easy maintenance solution was required.

The existing septic tank soakaway has been replaced by a reed bed filtration system to ensure water quality suitable for run-off as the water table is high.
