The school, a Victorian workhouse style building, sits on a very small urban site, but it was a preferable site due to it’s location with the church and presbytery, and it’s place within it’s Christian community.
In order to achieve a 50% increase in teaching area without occupying more external space, the existing tall Plymouth limestone building was stripped out and additional floors and galleries introduced, creating extra space.
The other alteration was a tightly planned two-storey building, which was squeezed in between the school and the adjoining church.
The results are educationally exciting with a visual interplay between areas, and the teaching areas achieved by the mezzanine floors provide an economical supervision of the differing activities undertaken within the class structure.
