Headlands

The site of the existing building, which an Estate Agent would describe as a dormer bungalow, is on the coastal slope directly above Mawgan Porth beach. Both this property and the only other one in the immediate locality called Dormers were built by a local architect, Mr Weaver who developed the two houses in the arts and craft style prevalent at that time. Although Mr Weaver has now died, Mrs Weaver still lives in Dormers, which remains largely unaltered since its original construction. Of significance, is the fact that the property Dormers has dormer windows and could be considered to have been a better and more considered design for a property, which would have permanent use rather than the property Headlands, which is of far simpler construction.

The original building was arranged principally on one floor with a basement garage and an attic which although utilized as bedroom accommodation was accessed by a fixed ladder. It was constructed of solid cast insitu concrete and was un-insulated. The new scheme brings the property in line with today’s requirements with increased levels of insulation and the introduction of solar hot water. The basement garage has become the main entrance hall with utility, wet room and storage. The external coal store has been made into a plant room with solar hot water collectors above and an external shower installed beneath. A new stair was introduced rising to the living/dining/kitchen area which has been extended on the seaward side with a single storey extension which takes its inspiration from the 1930’s with circular geometry and nautical themes. A new stair serves the first floor which has been made more useful with the introduction of three triangular dormer windows giving splendid sea views and a recessed balcony to the landing.
